It had been years in the making and I was about to take the leap. To venture where I had not ventured before (and there are very few of those places) and break my Sleaze Ball Cherry. That’s right I headed to my first Sleaze. Now let’s just say I was a tad excited, I was anticipating something similar to the Mardi Gras parties but a bit more dirty and a bit more out there. Hence my disappointment upon arrival.

Sleaze ball was about one quarter the size of the Mardi Gras after party. Now I understand how they were able to so proudly boast a sell out. The ratio is simple cut the number of available tickets and the floor space of the venue and you are guaranteed a sell out. Speaking to a few people on the night I was surprised to learn that it was indeed the smallest set up they had seen for a Sleaze Ball, including only the Hordern Pavilion and a small forecourt area the size of venue was most unimpressive.

Now all this negativity is not to say that I didn’t have a good time… it was a fun night and the shows the costumes and regalia were most enjoyable. The acts also proved most entertaining…

However I do have concerns over the future of this event considering that whilst organizers have boasted of the 5000 strong crowd and declared the event a success. Many of the punters I spoke to during the evening were declaring they would not fork out the $140 for a ticket next year.

The biggest news from the night was the announcement of the theme for the 2009 Mardi Gras: United Nations.

Hating Hetero Slammed by Homos

This is the Bumber Sticky which has caused outrage in the Queensland town of Gympie. News.com reports of Ron Owen was the driver of a vehicle which openly displayed this bumper sticket outside of a local government building in Queensland. And now Owen will be owing plenty.. to a couple a fearless dykes.

3 women have taken Owen to caught and won after being offended by the bumper sticker and the following television interview and website letter in which Owen spoke of said bumper sticker.

2 of the women are set to recieve $5000 and the other $2500 in compensation.

Dyking it Dictionary Style...

I first came across Urban Dictionary several years ago when working crazy night shifts until 5am. Urban Dictionary was used to entertain me at 3am when office cricket became boring and sleep was so very far away.

In its simplest form Urban dictionary is user based content site in which individuals both submit and edit content. Namely that of defining words.

I guess the simplest way to look at Urban Dictionary is to look at the way the users themselves define it. Currently the most popular definition of Urban Dictionary is

Urban Dictionary

A place formerly used to find out about slang, and now a place that teens with no life use as a burn book to whine about celebrities, their friends, etc., let out their sexual frustrations, show off their racist/sexist/homophobic/anti-(insert religion here) opinions, troll, and babble about things they know nothing about.

Urbandictionary.com isn’t a burn book or a webjournal site.

Urban Dictionary was the brain child of Aaron Peckham way back when in 1999.. before y2k destroyed the world and we all turned into chimpanzees who believe we are still all part of the human race.

The website is designed so that users can submit words and then define them and other users can rate the definitions. The higher definition ranks the more prominate position it has on the site. Users are also requested to submit a working phrase for there word. This often results in some of the most crass, profane, politically incorrect, racist, sexists, homophobic, and generally just plain wrong definition of words.

However it also results is some of the most ridiculous and funny definitions as well… on a bad day a random search of urban dictionary can often harbour shrieks of laughter from my desk as I procrastinate the day-to-day chores of my existence.

Urban Dictionary outside the WWW… is there an outside of the WWW???

Aaron has published two books since the inception of urban dictionary. The first being Urban Dicationary: Furarious Street slang Defined and the second Mo’ Urban Dicationary: Ridonkulous street slang defined. Both proving relatively popular as the gift that keeps on giving…

In keeping with the BGA style (despite the obvious nature of this post relating to said university assignment) here are BGA’s top five gayest sayings on Urban Dictionary…

1 – Gaybie

2 – dykalicious

3 – Ghey

4 – GayDar

5 – Lesbeterian

One Hetero for the Homos..

Brad Pitt has announced he will donate $126 thousands dollars towards the gay marriage campaign in the California. The donation comes ahead of a November 4 vote in the state in which voters will be able to decide if gay marriage should remain legal. The vote is being tabled under Proposition 8 which means if passed the constitution will be changed to reflect the same old howardesk rhetoric that a marriage should be between a woman and a man.

The Times Pitt had the following to say in regards to his donation

”Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn’t harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8.

Even though I feel the donation isn’t much considering the gross worth of Brad Pitt if nothing else his donation has made world wide news and has brought forward the issues relation to proposition 8. Hey if he hadn’t of donated it I wouldn’t be writing about it and you wouldn’t be reading about it. Its something I really enjoy when celebrities stand up for a cause not for their own self righteousness (I mean what is Brad Pitt going to get out of donating to gay marriage causes) but because it is something they feel strongly about.

Its really all about using ones power in order to do good…. Instead of evil…

Our Nicole a dyke icon?

Lesbians of Britain have voted and the femme is back in a big way. Some 4000 Dykes in Britain have taken to the polls to determine who is the sexiest Hollywood star with some surprising results. Heading the list in the online poll is Brit actor Rachel Weisz. The star of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns has recently become a mother and is engaged to fellow actor Darren Aronofsky

Coming Second on the Women we’d Love to love pole is no other than our own femme fatale Nicole Kidman. Recently married to Keith Urban and proud mother Nicole is in my opinion is a surprise inclusion in the list. Straight as an arrow and very femme Nicole possesses few attributes commonly associated with lesbians and is not an open advocate for the gay and lesbian community.

Other Hollywood stars to be included on this list are Minnie Driver and true dykecon Keira Knightly. Interestingly no American Stars made the list of top Hollywood girls. An interesting point considering well Hollywood is in America.

Here is the complete Top Ten list…

So tell me what do you think of the list? Are they all to femme/straight loooking? Are there any true our and proud Lesbians in Hollywood that should have made this list?

Who would be on your top ten list?

Here is BGA’s Top 8 List of the hottest Hollywood Chics.

We all at time feel frustrated whether its from things that occur beyond our control or our set plans are turned upside down. Sometimes we even feel frustrated with ourselves.

A few things in this world really frustrate me. One in particular is venturing to the video store.. and not only that the whole process of hiring and then watching a video especially if the said dvd then skips, jumps and doesn’t word.. even worse when the video is in subtitles so small I feel like stealing my grandmothers reading glasses..

Ahhh yes frustrations….

When I head down to my local video store on a rainy cold evening not only am I often frustrated by the lack of videos I actually want to watch being available. I am also often wandering the selves staring blankly at numerous hetero romantic comedies, action movies and thrillers for a longer period than I am actually going to spend watching the video.

Once this argious process is over and having chosen a DVD I think I may find remotely interesting I head off home and get ready to gear up for an extended session on the couch with a bowl of microwave popcorn, diet coke and a blankie.

Then half an hour into the movie I am resided to the fact that yes it may actually be remotely interesting to watch a pash fest between two Hollywood stars.. Then it stops.. Jumps a bit.. My heart leaps from my chest but alas it continues to work.. Well at least for a few more minutes until it stops and jumps again, this process is repeated several times until I grab the remote and attempt to skip between scenes in order to watch the remainder of the movie.. after wasting half an hour on this process I give up.. return to normal television viewing and vow to give em heaps at the video store when I return the movie.

However frustrations can be eliminated, we can put in processes to ensure we are not in situations in which we will feel frustrated. Recently I attempted to do this.. Rather than head to my local video store and spends hours walking up and down the selves and selves of mindless dvd’s I decided to be resourceful…. I went online and rented some movies from a gay and lesbian dvd shop.. ahh yes my happiness when 4 days after making my purchase 3 all lesbian DVD’s packaged with a return envelope arrived in my letterbox… 2 days later I set myself up to watch them… and discovered something even more frustrating… whats worse than hiring movies from a shop and not have them work… is renting them online from a shop interstate and not having one of the bloody movies work…

Lindsay’s Lesbian Liaison’s…

Ok now its time to admit it I am an entertainment section whore… that’s right everyday I sit there at lunch with all good intentions of going to the gym or reading something insightful.. However rather than indulging in some sort of constructive activity. Everyday I find myself scanning the entertainment section of such informative news sites as www.smh.com.au and www.news.com.au. I relish in reading about the latest crap tv shows (Think 90210) that I am to busy to watch or reading about the latest drug induced performance (not necessarily musical) by Amy Winehouse or Lily Allen. However this is a lesbian blog and lately I have been relishing in reading in the latest lesbian liaisons of the most famously trashy not so lesbian lesbian Lindsay. So far I have read about her not so straight lifestyle with Samantha Ronson indulging in everything from Samantha lighting up a cigarette 5 minutes after getting off a plane in Sydney. To Lindsay refusing to do a playboy shoot and their planned outing party next month ( the worlds worst kept secret… Im pretty sure in order to have an outing party one would have to not be out.. but hey just me). And today is no different. Apparently Lindsay wants to have a baby and the conception of the said lesbian love child will involve one of Lindsay’s former boyfriends. However this will not occur until after there pending nuptials. Reading of the Lesbian lifestyles of the rich and famous in particular Lindsay and Sam is like reading a badly scripted version of The L Word Except with a hell of a lot more money and a whole lot less variety. It is almost refreshing to see the media reporting of this lesbian love fest with as much vigor as any brangelina story. However I am left to wonder how long it will take after the outing party/wedding/baby before this couple start to cash in on there new found trashy mag lesbian fame. Will we be seeing wedding dresses for her and her by Lindsay and Sam, maybe it will be a baby clothing range for bubbies with two mummies. The Lindsay and Sam hold hands dolls. Maybe there will be Lindsay’s guide to being pretty, rich and gay.. What do you think? What marketability does this couple have? And will they cash in on it? And if they do would you buy it…

The Road Not Taken..

okay… despite all this rambling opinionated rants of late. i decided to share with you one of my favourite poems of all time. This poem was written way back when, in 1916 and i first discovered back in 1998 and it has never left me. Written by Robert Frost this poem is essentially thought to have one of two meanings one literal and one ironic. The irony in the poem is based upon the last two lines.. so anyways here you go… i hope you enjoy it as much as i do…

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

Things that make you go hmmm....

Whilst Surfing the vast array of gay and lesbian media sources this evening in search of some vital, news breaking, life changing story… i discovered something much more self indulgent that i thought i would share with you all..

Back when i started this blog several weeks ago i made the following post. And this evening i discover this on same same.com.au posted 11 days after my initial post… now i am sure it is a coincidence but kinda freaky hey….

3 Reasons Why the latest blog by Amber Petty is a total piece of crap!!

Firstly the surprising title of the latest dishing from Amber Petty is “Why Fake Lesbians Turn me off” okay call me slightly dumbfounded by im pretty sure lesbians in general would probably turn her off. Now realistically I cant speak for what goes on in the closed doors of the Petty household. But Amber is an out and proud hetero and as such I doubt that lesbians fake or not would not do much for her…

Secondly its this statement made by Amber in the piece of tripe

“Did you really kiss a girl or are you simply cashing in on the new cultural trend of pseudo-lesbianism sweeping the world?” Im sorry Amber but did you really write this blog because your truly care about the lesbian community, the current trends, struggles and livelihoods of your distant dyke cousins or are you writing this trying to cash in on another new cultural trend. That being the popularisation of lesbian culture, which has been created by the said songs that you attempt to bag.

Thirdly its this ill educated statement “We all have male and female hormones and, for some girls, including the more girlie girls or “lipstick lesbians”, they have a strong male energy that dictates how they feel and who they feel it for, and this often results in a desire for the same sex.”

Okay I seriously had to read this 5 times before I could vaguely understand what she is talking about. No wait im still not sure what she is talking about. However I think Amber may have found in this sentence alone what causes homosexuality in lesbians and its about a strong male energy that dictates a desires for women. That’s about as plausable as the height of the ring finger theory…

Is no news better than lesbian news

Here I sit… a little bit bored and a bit miffed. Whilst looking for some interesting, world changing breaking news in the lesbian world to report on I discovered this.

If you go to google news and type in lesbian here is what you get….

40 stories relating to a woman in America who was ejected from a federal building for security for wearing a lesbian.com t shirt…

29 stories relating to Lindsay Lohan’s denial of any previous lesbian relationship with Courteney Semel

And 9 stories about the New Zealand justice system changing terminology from foreman to foreperson…

enough said…

Gay Marriage becomes a Hallmark Holiday!

That’s right Hallmark is releasing a set of four cards specifically designed for gay marriages, commitment ceremonies etc. Proving yet again that a pink dollar is a lucrative dollar. This comes on the back of hallmark last year releasing coming out cards. (I know I wasn’t going to get one of those from my mother when I came out). Anyway this all got me thinking so far the four cards released are well rather neutral with sayings such as “two hearts one promise”. Surely Hallmark could do better.

So here are a couple I have come up with a bit of an aussie twist…

Roses are red,

Violets are blue

This weddings not legal

But I love you..

If two stand shoulder to shoulder against the Rudd’s,

Happy together, the Rudd’s themselves are helpless

Against them while they stand so.

Let all thy joys be as the month of May,

And all thy days be as a marriage day

If only it was that we weren’t gay.

Channel 9 Seeking Gay Newlyweds??

Channel 9 is on the hunt in their new show ‘Here come the Newlyweds’ for yet another token gay or lesbian couple. Ignoring the tokenistic gesture of yet another reality tv show to be inclusive and include a minority group ( see previous posts).

Something else is fishy in this.

Now channel 9 will have to be looking for a gay or lesbian couple who have either married overseas (hmm maybe they could get Portia and Ellen) or they will be out to redefine the governments anti gay marriage stance. If the show seeks a gay or lesbian couple who have entered into a civil partnership, channel 9 and channel 9 alone will be seeking to classify that as marriage. Marriage is not the same as a civil partnership. Well I guess in channel 9s case it may be… along as it’s a ratings spinner!

Going for Gay Gold

Okay, enough of the slander, propaganda and perpetual rants.

This post i shall be positive.

Its time to get your arm chairs ready and your loud and proud cheering voice out, as Aussie Olympic Driver Matt Mitcham takes to the pool this Monday.

Out and proud Matt came out in a big way earlier this year and is being heralded as the only gay in the Aussie village in Beijing.( although Im not exactly sure how true that statement is).He is competing in the 3m springboard preliminaries on Monday, followed by the mens 10 metre later on in the week.

Check out the Beijing site for details on his events…

The Great Closet of the Beijing Games

As our Olympians compete in Beijing this week they should remember not take one thing with them. A DVD of the critically acclaimed film directed by Chinese born Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain. It along with a host of other films directed towards a gay and lesbian audience are banned in China.

In addition to this whilst Aussies sit back and watch countries rarely heard of compete in sports rarely seen on TV. It is important to note that some 80 countries competing in these games still have laws banning homosexuality.

Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Sudan, Somalia, Mauritania, Yemen, all have laws which hold the death penalty as punishment for a homosexual act. While other countries have varying degrees of laws banning homosexuality with punishments including fines, years of hard labour and gaol time.

So whilst we cheer on our Aussie Olympians at the Beijing games maybe we should spare a thought for our gay and lesbian counterparts not as fortunate to have the freedoms and rights we have in this lucky country.

Pink is the New Black!

Is Pink the New Black?

This week David Jones announced that pink is the new black and how right they were. Especially when considering pink is the colour commonly associated with gay and lesbian community. If pink is indeed the new black then i want to crawl back into my nice alternative lifestyle and attempt to remain being one out of ten… not one out of five or one out of 3… those ratios suck!

Gone are the days when everyone got excited about Brittney Spears kissing Madonna at the MTV awards as a one off thing. We now have fledgling dykes everywhere from the Tyra Banks parade that is Next Top Model (since when did we care about clothes let alone showing off the latest in couture fashion) to Jess Origliasso from The Veronicas being spotted at the Bank on a Wednesday to Lindsay Lohan shacking up with a female DJ Samantha Ronson. Not to mention the constant tyrade of reality TV shows each with there own token dyke (think survivor, biggest loser, big brother etc ).

The music business is in on the mainstream dykism. No longer are we analysing the lyrics of Missy Higgins song Scar attempting to conclude whether or not it has a lesbian connotation. Instead blaring out of top 40 radio stations across the globe is Katy Perry singing a pro hetero song on kissing a girl, with lyrics like..

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don’t mean I’m in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it

I mean is this a song promoting women’s pride? a celebration of the achievement of acceptance for gays and lesbians? or is she out to impress her boyfriend.

The love does dare not speak its name is now not only being spoken it is being screamed, popularised, celebritised and made mainstream…. and with equal rights for the lesbian community becoming more and more aligned with our hetero counterparts, we have less to struggle for and have less to fight for… but does this mean we should become more normalised, boring and mainstream. Bring back the controversy, and sensationalism

It was far more interesting!

Pub or Protest

Protest or Pub….

This Sunday marks the 4th annual (I’m not sure that 4 years is really something to brag about, but hey!) National Day of Action March for Same Sex Marriage. The march starting at Taylor’s Square is designed to show Rudd that the gay community isn’t in favour of him regurgitating Howard’s “marriage is a union between a man and a women” stance.

A few things irk me about this so called National Day of Action (apart from the fact that I have had flyer’s for it shoved down my throat since June.) Firstly if it is truly a national day of action then why is it not being held on the same day across the country? With Brisbane protesting on the 10th, Canberra on 2nd and Perth on the 9th. It’s not really a national day of action more like several different days of action in several different cities.

Secondly 500 people at a protest is not exactly strong numbers, I reckon more people will venture through the doors of ARQ over the weekend than are contemplating attending this protest.

I’m not saying that I agree with Rudd’s Howard rhetoric, I just think that maybe there are better ways, than a measly annual protest with poor attendance that’s not even really national to get our message across.
